Melissa Leo: Oscar or Not?
I'm sure most of you have heard tell about Melissa Leo's flashy, "CONSIDER..." ads that she herself bought for the Hollywood trade papers just recently that have begun some talk from many people. But what's funny about them is how they don't capitalize on her performance in The Fighter, but rather a classic, glamour look that's just confusing in a way. Not many "campaign ads" have been presented in a un-humble way to score the golden boy like this. I think there kind of stupid, really. For one, I just can't see how this will win people over -- ("ooh, look at that sexy fifty year old in sequins!") -- and some voters have expressed their feelings over this and she has lost some supporters, as in one saying, "she lost my vote". It may not be her actual acting work, but it's Leo who would win and it is kind of tasteless in a showy way. I mean, she's considered the front runner and the studio has her back, so why this little stunt? She claims its to express her anger over ageism/sexism in Hollywood, but it now it just feels like a back fire, that could result in the Oscar going to someone else. I hear that Steinfeld could upset, which I would enjoy seeing despite category fraud -- but I hope this gives Amy Adams the boost to the finish line because she deserves it most.
Thoughts??

She could easily still win, but it was clearly a dumb move on her part. The ad also does not go well with her speeches which have been perceived by some as phony. It is not as bad as say Chill Wills, but since she is the front runner and Wills was not it seems almost more foolish.
It's stupid yes, but I really don't think this will ruin her chances much.
But I do have an odd feeling she may not win, I'm crossing my fingers for an Amy win as well. Though Steinfeld is more likely to surprise. And somehow, I think Jackie Weaver may surprise.
It's so interesting. Some say that Steinfeld is winning, but I don't see that happening. I was a big hyper for Melissa's performance, but her fake speeches and a re-watched turned me off. I hope she doesn't win.
I can see Jacki Weaver pulling a Marcia Gay Harden (oh that would be sooooooooo deserved). I read an interview with Russel Crowe where he said that he really rooted for Jacki to win and he said he heard great words about Jacki and he's optimistic about her chances. Interesting enough, this interview was NEVER published on imdb or something. I accidently came across it when I googled Jacki.
However, I feel it so much that Helena might just win. I think she was splendid at a second glance and she's very much underrated. BAFTA is the best predictor for Best Supporting Actress. It was the only major award given to Tilda. And who wins? SURPRISE! Tilda. I think something similar will happen to Helena. If The King's Speech sweeps, Helena will win. Geoffrey Rush's chances are overestimated and Helena's are underestimated. She has the most Oscar-friendly role of the five (supportive wife that is), SHE is the overdue (not Melissa as some say), many think she should have won for Wings of the Dive (I think there are many in the Academy). Plus, she's said to give a great performance in Alice in Wonderland and she's quite memorable in HP (also nominated so they watched them for sure). Moreover, she seemed to be always playing a witch and she's playing against the type.
I'm really hoping for either Jacki or Helena. It's quite possible, though that people overthink the whole thing and Melissa's winning after all (I wouldn't like that). And If Hailee Steinfeld upsets... I will be furious.
It hasn't hurt 95% of the past winners in the last decade, so I don't think she'll loose it over an awful ad. The only way she could loose is if The King's Speech really sweeps this year.
I don't see Helena winning at all really. Yes, The King's Speech COULD sweep, but this year seems pretty strong for Supporting so they may go another way.
I agree with Joe in thinking that Leo's name may not be set in stone yet. I mean isn't Amy overdue in a way? It's her third nom, and she's an actress with impressive range and serious talent, so why isn't she being more favored? She's my pick, and I would LOVE to see this upset happen, but I just can't see it sadly. But I do think Leo is great, and I wouldn't be too pissed if she does win.
I'm shocked at Steinfeld's near front runner status, not based off her performance, but the fact of her misplacement. Though O'Neal won in a somewhat of a surprise, her fellow nominees were much weaker. Again, I wouldn't be mad to see this happen, despite the fact that she shouldn't really be in this category.
At this point I don't think of the OScar going to those who deserve it, so I want hbc to win because she's long overdue.
