Why Steinfeld? And why no Benning? Did you see Winter's Bone?

Although I don't think she's worthy.

I knew you'd be surprised!

Why Steinfeld? Well, firstly, she was the only sense of sharp clarity in a move that was muddled from nearly beginning to end. She conveys the complex emotions, intelligence, and integrity of Mattie so vividly and clearly that her sharp characterization is on a whole other level than what the muddy and awful Jeff Bridges tries to accomplish. Steinfeld is likable and smart without being a smart-ass or an obnoxious kid who's just tagging along. And she charts Mattie's journey with mature complexities that felt fresh and interesting at ever moment (which contrasted the people and situations around her). I don't get the hate at all, and her Supporting Actress nod is a worthy one. And though its category fraud, her actual performance is my second favorite for this year's batch.

And why no Bening? I was confused at first, but as the movie continued I kept thinking to myself how much I hated this character and how much the performance annoyed me. I don't get the praise -- it's a shallow, soulless performance of a shallow and uninteresting role. I can't understand the praise AT ALL for this one-note performance, and don't get why Moore is getting squat. Her performance is complex and faceted, and her character actually has depth and an arc (which Bening doesn't have). Her speech at the end is especially moving. Moore and Ruffalo where the only two great thing about the film, and I HATED the anti-male/feminist ending.

But I'm so glad that Portman won at SAG, which makes her a tighter lock for Oscar, and after seeing the film again, she grew on me.

I think she was good, but the writing spoils what her performance could have been, there's depth, but not enough. I'd give her a 4.

I was talking about Benning, not Steinfeld.

Steinfeld had some good moments, but it's just so annoying and one-note. I just couldn't stand it. The movie is not Oscar-worthy, but I think it's really entertaining, nothing more or less then that.

I still haven't seen The Fighter or Blue Valentine yet. I've been feeling sick, so I haven't been active as much lately.

I agree, True Grit itself isn't Oscar worthy, because I just really didn't like it at all, so Hailee's performance elevates it even more.

And see The Fighter next! It's amazing, though I think Amy is a lot better than Melissa.

Excuse me, but that was a cheap and shallow ending that had NO respect for Paul and his unfortunate situation. So don't tell me to get over myself because of my opinion and nearly factual view on the ending.

Well I'm glad you're unafraid to nominate Date Night. Sure, it was goofy fun - but I believe it was far funnier than people gave it credit for!

Um,Paul is a total loser, who got himself in that situation ..

Paul was a sympathetic and decent human character who was shoved into the dark, when Bening's stupid, annoying caricature was glorified at the end. It sounds like the female filmmakers just didn't want to see Paul get the redemption he deserved.

I will post my nominees right before the ceremony. There is one movie, we seem to love both, but I'm not saying which, yet. :D
